Roppongi Sakurazaka, Cherry blossom slope in Roppongi, Japan
Roppongi Sakurazaka is a gently sloping street in the Roppongi district of Tokyo, lined on both sides with rows of cherry trees. The path connects a quiet residential side of the neighborhood to the busier Roppongi Hills area.
The street received its name when cherry trees were planted during the development of the Roppongi Hills complex in the early 2000s. Before that, the slope existed as an ordinary residential path without any particular identity.
The street name translates to "cherry blossom slope" in Japanese, which describes exactly what visitors see in spring. The trees draw people out for hanami, the tradition of sitting under flowering branches to enjoy the season.
The slope is just a short walk from Roppongi Station and easy to find on foot from the main street. Spring is the most popular time to visit, so expect more people around during the cherry blossom weeks.
On clear evenings, Tokyo Tower appears at the end of the street, framed by the branches of the cherry trees when they are in bloom. This view is one of the few places in Roppongi where a classic city landmark lines up with a natural foreground.
