Roppongi, Entertainment district in Minato-ku, Japan
Roppongi is a district in Minato-ku that combines office towers, upscale residential buildings, and entertainment options across complexes like Roppongi Hills and Tokyo Midtown. The area spreads over several blocks with wide streets, shopping centers, and public plazas grouped around the major developments.
After the Second World War, an international neighborhood developed here due to proximity to US military facilities and foreign embassies. The large property projects emerged from the early 2000s onwards and fundamentally changed the appearance.
Art enthusiasts associate the area with three leading museums that form what locals call the Art Triangle. Visitors experience modern Japanese art alongside international exhibitions, with galleries often staying open late into the evening.
The district can be reached via two subway lines at Roppongi Station, the Hibiya Line and the Oedo Line. Most shops and restaurants stay open late, with the area becoming especially active in the evening.
The name comes from six large zelkova trees that served as landmarks during the Edo period. These old trees once marked territory boundaries at a time when the area was still rural.
