Ezzelini Castle

Ezzelini Castle, Medieval castle in Romano d'Ezzelino, Italy

Ezzelini Castle sits atop Colle Bastia hill with traces of a quadrangular structure, double defensive walls, and four corner towers that command views over the lowlands. Scattered stones and brick pieces along the access path mark where the fortress once stood.

Early in the 11th century, Emperor Conrad II granted this fortress to Ecelo, founder of the Ezzelini line, rewarding his loyalty. The castle then served as the power base for the family's rule over the region for generations to come.

Annual medieval reenactments at the site celebrate the Ezzelini family legacy, drawing visitors to experience how the lords once lived and ruled from this stronghold.

The climb to the hilltop is navigable, though the ruins are partially overgrown and require careful footing in places. Visiting on dry days makes exploring the site more comfortable and safer.

The fortress made clever use of steep northern cliffs as a built-in defense, while gentle southern slopes provided access routes that could be controlled. This blend of natural geography and military design created a position that was remarkably hard to breach.
