Château de Shirosei

Shiroishi Castle is a Japanese fortress in Shiroishi that rises above flat terrain with a construction of stone and wood. The structure features defensive walls, a central tower, and multiple wooden levels stacked vertically in traditional feudal style.

The castle was established as the seat of the Katakura family, who served as retainers of the Date clan from Sendai Domain. It remained a strategic center throughout the Edo period and continued until 1875.

The castle displays traditional Japanese defensive design and was built as the seat of the Katakura family. The stone foundation and wooden structures reflect the architectural style of feudal fortifications and how such places were designed for both military strength and residence.

The castle is accessible by regular train service to Shiroishi station and is located centrally within the city. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since there are stairs and uneven paths throughout the site.

The castle is one of the few fortifications that remained intact despite the Tokugawa shogunate's strict limitations on castle construction across Japan. This survival makes it a rare example of continuity during a period of major changes.
