Botanic Gardens of Toyama, Botanical garden in Toyama Prefecture, Japan.
The Botanic Gardens of Toyama is a 24.7-hectare facility with pyramid-shaped greenhouses housing over 4,000 plant varieties. The collection is divided into specialized areas that separate species from around the world and from Japan itself.
The gardens were established in 1989 and expanded with new greenhouses through the 1990s and early 2000s. These additions allowed the facility to develop specialized sections for tropical and alpine plants.
The gardens feature plants from the Japan Sea coast, showing visitors which species naturally grow in this climate. This collection connects nature and regional geography in ways you notice as you walk through different areas.
The gardens are located in Toyama and open most days from morning through early evening, giving you plenty of time to explore the different sections. Sturdy shoes help when touring the large site with its many pathways.
The facility holds the largest collection of plants from Yunnan Province in Japan, with over 100 species from this Chinese region. Visitors can see these rare plants, which are not gathered so completely anywhere else in the country.
