Takahashi Setsurō Art Museum of Azumino

The museum displays a collection of lacquer artworks and ink paintings created by artist Setsuro Takahashi throughout his professional life.

The building, designed by architect Hiroshi Miyazaki and opened in 2003, received the AIJ Annual Architectural Design Commendation for its modern structure.

The exhibition showcases traditional Japanese lacquerware techniques through Takahashi's innovative approach to urushi, an ancient art form dating back to 4500 BC.

Visitors can reach the museum via a 10-minute taxi ride from Hotaka Station or take a 20-minute walk from Ariake Station on the JR Oito Line.

The museum grounds include a precise reproduction of Takahashi's childhood residence, offering insights into 19th-century Japanese domestic architecture.
