Château de Kasugajo, Mountain castle in Joetsu, Japan.

The castle stands on two ridges at 180 meters elevation, featuring earthen ramparts and dry moats built across multiple mountain terraces.

Constructed by the Nagao clan, the fortress became the primary stronghold of warlord Uesugi Kenshin in 1548 during the Sengoku period.

The castle holds recognition as one of Japan's Five Greatest Mountain Castles, alongside Nanao, Odani, Kannonji, and Gassantoda fortresses.

Visitors can reach the castle ruins through a 20-minute walk from Kasugayama Shrine, with the site offering views of Joetsu city and the Sea of Japan.

The castle complex maintained its defenses without stone walls, relying instead on strategic positioning and earthwork fortifications across the terrain.
