桜塚古墳群

Sakurazuka Kofungun is a cluster of ancient burial mounds scattered across a residential neighborhood in Toyonaka City, Osaka Prefecture. The site contains multiple tombs with different shapes and sizes that date back several centuries.

These burial mounds were built between the 3rd and 6th centuries when local leaders were interred in these monumental structures. The site represents a time when powerful regional families displayed their authority through these enormous public works.

The mounds reflect how ancient communities honored their leaders through burial rituals and monumental construction. You can see the difference between circular and keyhole-shaped designs, which tells you something about the status of those buried there.

The site sits about a 15-minute walk from Toyonaka Station on the Hankyu Takarazuka Line, making it straightforward to reach. Wear comfortable shoes as you will be moving around uneven ground between the mounds.

The burial chambers inside some mounds held valuable items when they were opened, including ancient mirrors and weapons from the 4th century. These findings reveal what the early Japanese elite considered important enough to take with them in death.
