Tekisui Museum of Art, Art museum in Yama-Ashiya-chō, Japan.
The Tekisui Museum of Art is an art museum in Yama-Ashiya-chō, Japan, housed in a former private residence and focused on Japanese ceramics and pottery. The original room layout of the house has been kept, so visitors move through the collection as if walking through a home rather than a conventional gallery.
The building was completed in 1932 as the private home of financier Kichirobei Yamaguchi, designed by architect Takeo Yasui. It was later opened to the public, turning a personal art collection and a family house into a place anyone can visit.
The museum hosts pottery workshops in an on-site kiln where visitors can try ceramic techniques passed down through generations. The rotating exhibitions focus on Japanese ceramics across different styles and periods, giving a broad sense of how the craft evolved over time.
The museum is about a ten-minute walk from Ashiyagawa Station, making it easy to reach by train. Opening hours can change depending on the current exhibition, so it is worth checking before your visit.
The house is an example of Kansai Modernist architecture, a style that combined Western and Japanese building elements in ways rarely seen elsewhere. Among the objects on display is a decorated paper box with fan-shaped and bird-like patterns, showing how carefully everyday objects in wealthy homes were made.
