Kamiya Bar, Historical bar in Asakusa, Japan
Kamiya Bar is a western-style establishment in Asakusa with two levels serving different purposes. The ground floor features the bar with bright lighting and Formica-topped tables, while the upper level contains a restaurant section.
The bar was founded in 1880 by Kamiya Denbei as Tokyo's first western-style drinking establishment. This opening coincided with the Meiji period, when Japan rapidly adopted Western customs and architecture.
The name comes from its founder, and writers like Osamu Dazai visited regularly to gather with other artists and thinkers. The bar became a social meeting place for Tokyo's literary circles during the 20th century.
The location is just one minute from Asakusa Station, served by multiple subway lines for easy access. It is a compact space, so expect crowded conditions during peak hours.
The bar created Denki Bran, a cocktail mixing brandy, gin, wine, and herbs that became popular during the 1800s. People believed this drink had the power to prevent cholera, making it a unique part of drinking culture.
