綿向山, Mountain summit in Gamo County, Japan.
Watamukisan is a mountain summit in the Suzuka range, in Shiga Prefecture, rising to 1,110 meters above sea level. On clear days, the top offers a wide view over both the Ise Bay and the Omi Basin.
Over several centuries, the mountain grew into a place of worship, drawing pilgrims from across the region. The structures built along its paths at different periods reflect how its role changed and deepened over time.
Stone monuments and small shrines are scattered along the trails, left by generations of worshippers who came here on foot. These quiet markers are easy to spot and give the climb a different feel from an ordinary mountain walk.
A natural spring called Kinmyosui is found at the eighth station along the trail, and it is the only reliable water source on the way up. It is wise to carry enough water from the start rather than counting on being able to fill up there.
Part of the mountain sits within a nationally protected contact metamorphic zone, where the rock surfaces take on unusual shades of rust red and black. These colors come from mineral reactions in the rock and are visible directly on the trail.
