鬼室神社

鬼室神社, Shinto shrine in Japan

This shrine is a Shinto sanctuary in Hino with simple stone buildings and traditional paths throughout its grounds. The tomb of a significant historical figure rests behind the main hall, marked by a small stone altar.

The shrine was originally founded in the 15th century as a hall dedicated to a deity, where villagers came to pay their respects. In the 19th century, it took its current name and became a memorial place for a famous person from Korea who lived in this region.

This shrine honors a figure from Korea who settled in this region over a thousand years ago. Visitors can sense how different cultures met and connected at this quiet place.

The shrine is reachable by bus from Sakuragawa Station, with a trip taking about 25 minutes followed by a short walk to the entrance. Note that bus service may be suspended on weekends and during certain holiday periods.

The place has an interesting connection to Korea and is sometimes marked with both Japanese and Korean script on its signs. This connection shows an early chapter of exchange and coexistence between the two nations spanning more than ten centuries.
