Ishidō-ji, Buddhist temple in Higashiōmi, Japan.
The temple grounds contain thousands of stone pagodas and Buddhist statues surrounding a prominent three-story stone pagoda known as the pillars of King Ashoka.
Founded during the early centuries of Buddhism in Japan, Ishidō-ji gained imperial recognition in 1006 when Emperor Ichijo officially designated it as a chokugan-ji temple.
The temple marks the twenty-second stop along the Omi Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage route, drawing Buddhist practitioners who seek spiritual enlightenment through sacred journeys.
The Stone Pagoda Festival takes place at the end of August, illuminating the temple grounds with lanterns that light up the numerous stone structures.
The temple houses a collection of 84,000 stupas, which according to tradition were distributed worldwide by Ashoka the Great to promote Buddhism.
