Eigen-ji, Buddhist temple in Higashiōmi, Japan.
Eigen-ji is a Buddhist temple nestled at the base of mountains where the Echigawa River flows through its distinctive red-railed Tando Bridge, connecting multiple temple buildings scattered across the grounds. The complex features meditation spaces and gardens laid out across different levels.
The temple was founded in 1361 by Zen master Jakushitsu Genkō and grew into a major religious center. It suffered severe fires in 1492 and 1563 but was reconstructed afterward.
The temple houses the Yotsugi Kannon, a hidden Buddhist statue revealed to the public only once every 25 years during special ceremonies. This rare event draws devotees who wait for the next viewing opportunity.
The grounds are typically open to visitors for exploration of the various areas and buildings. Wearing sturdy shoes is helpful since the terrain is uneven and pathways slope upward.
The temple serves as headquarters for its own Rinzai Zen branch and oversees more than 120 temples throughout Japan. This network role makes it a significant spiritual institution extending far beyond its own walls.
