Kannonshō-ji, Buddhist temple in Ōmihachiman, Japan
Kannonshō-ji is a Buddhist temple located on Mount Kinugasa at approximately 370 meters elevation, overlooking the eastern shore of Lake Biwa. The temple complex spreads across the mountainside with several buildings and halls arranged among the forest trees and stone pathways.
The temple was founded in 605 CE by Prince Shōtoku, making it one of the earliest Buddhist structures in the Ōmi region. This early establishment helped shape the religious landscape of the area for over 1,400 years.
This temple serves as the 32nd station on the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage route, attracting Buddhist pilgrims from across Japan who come to pay their respects. The site's spiritual role is evident in the offerings and prayer plaques left by visitors throughout the grounds.
Visitors can reach the temple by taking a bus from Notogawa Station to the Kannon-ji-guchi stop, followed by a steep 50-minute climb up the mountain. Sturdy footwear and plenty of water are essential, as the trail is demanding and exposed to the elements.
The main hall houses a white sandalwood statue of Senju Kannon carved from approximately 23 tons of imported Indian wood, standing over 6 meters tall with its halo. This rare wooden sculpture is a masterwork of traditional craftsmanship and draws art enthusiasts from around the region.
