Borderless Art Museum NO-MA, Art gallery in Omihachiman, Japan.
Borderless Art Museum NO-MA is housed in a renovated residential building from the early Showa period, featuring traditional Japanese rooms and storage areas in Shiga Prefecture. The structure maintains its original wooden architecture and room layout while functioning as a contemporary art space.
The building began as a residential home called Nomatei and opened as an art gallery in June 2004. It received official museum status in 2007.
The museum displays works by artists with disabilities alongside pieces by other creators, showing that artistic ability comes in many forms. Visitors can observe how different kinds of artistic expression coexist naturally in the same space.
The museum is accessible by bus from Omi-Hachiman Station, with a journey of about 10 minutes to the Osugicho stop. Opening hours run from 11:00 to 17:00, allowing ample time to explore the gallery spaces at a relaxed pace.
The museum's name comes from the family of the original building owner, reflecting a deep connection to local history. This personal link to the community is felt throughout the exhibition choices.
