Ishiba-ji, Buddhist temple in Higashiōmi, Japan.
Ishiba-ji is a Buddhist temple in Higashiomi situated near the eastern shore of Lake Biwa, housing an impressive sandalwood statue of Senju Kannon with multiple faces and thousand arms. The grounds include several buildings, gardens, and pathways that guide visitors through the temple complex.
The temple was founded in 594 after Prince Shotoku's horse transformed into stone and sank into a nearby pond during his visit. This legendary event marked the establishment of the sanctuary at this location.
The temple belongs to the Rinzai sect of Buddhism and remains an active place of worship where visitors can observe monks conducting daily rituals and meditation practices.
The grounds are easily explored on foot with marked pathways connecting the buildings and gardens that offer a pleasant walk through the site. Comfortable footwear is recommended, especially when walking the paths along the lakeshore.
The main statue of Senju Kannon was reconstructed using sandalwood imported from India following a devastating fire in 1993 that destroyed the original. This restoration reflects the ongoing commitment of the community to preserve this sacred object.
