Kayano Shigeru Nibutani Ainu Museum, Ainu heritage museum in Nibutani, Japan.
The Kayano Shigeru Nibutani Ainu Museum is an Ainu museum in Nibutani, Hokkaido, Japan, dedicated to the culture and material heritage of the Ainu people. It holds a large collection of handcrafted objects, ceremonial items, and tools gathered by Shigeru Kayano over his lifetime.
Shigeru Kayano, an Ainu activist who later became a member of the Japanese Parliament, founded this museum in 1972 and opened his personal collection to the public. His work to document the Ainu language and culture helped raise awareness of the rights of this people in Japan.
The museum displays everyday objects, tools, and ceremonial pieces made by Ainu craftspeople, giving a concrete look at how this community lived. Many items are decorated with plant-based motifs that are typical of Ainu visual traditions and run throughout the whole collection.
The museum is in Nibutani, a small area of Hokkaido that is most easily reached by car. Half a day is generally enough time to go through the collection at a comfortable pace.
More than 200 objects in the collection have been officially recognized as important cultural properties of Japan, which is unusual for a museum built by a single person. Shigeru Kayano was also one of the last fluent speakers of the Ainu language and recorded his voice to help preserve it.
