Kaiseizan Park, Urban park in Kōriyama, Japan
Kaiseizan Park is an urban park in Kōriyama built around Lake Isuzu, with baseball fields, athletic areas, and a swimming zone spread across its grounds. A rose garden sits within the park alongside open lawns shaded by rows of cherry trees.
The park was established in the late 19th century, when Somei-Yoshino cherry trees were first planted there, placing it among the earliest sites in Japan to cultivate that variety. Over the following decades it grew into the main green space of the city.
In spring, the park fills with people sitting under the cherry trees for hanami, the Japanese tradition of flower viewing. Families and friends gather on blankets, share food, and spend hours enjoying the blossoms together.
The park is easy to reach by bus from Kōriyama Station, with a stop near City Hall close to the entrance. Weekday visits tend to be quieter, while weekends and cherry blossom season draw much larger crowds.
The rose garden inside the park blooms twice a year, once in June and again in October, which is rare for gardens in this region. The October flowering often surprises visitors who do not expect to find roses blooming so late in the season.
