The region developed into a post station along major travel routes during the Edo period. In September 1924, it officially received city status.
The name derives from a court lady in the Nara period who is honored in local legends. The city serves today as a commercial hub for the surrounding counties, where farmers sell their produce at small markets.
The train station offers connections to other cities in the prefecture and beyond. Several bus lines run between the city districts and the surrounding villages.
The Uneme Festival attracts thousands of participants every August who parade through the streets. The drummers wear traditional costumes and play together in rhythm.
