Nunobiki Highlands, Highland area with wind farm in Kōriyama, Japan
Nunobiki Highlands is an elevated plateau in Kōriyama positioned 1,000 meters above sea level, where 33 large wind turbines generate renewable energy across the open landscape. The site combines wind power infrastructure with agricultural fields, creating a working landscape of both energy and farming.
The Nunobiki Wind Farm was established during Japan's early phase of wind power development, marking a significant shift in renewable energy infrastructure for the region. Its construction represented the country's commitment to expanding sustainable energy sources beyond traditional methods.
The Kaze no Kogen Matsuri festival connects visitors with local farming traditions through hands-on radish and cabbage harvesting activities held across the highland fields.
Visitors can take the Shinkansen to Kōriyama Station and then rent a car or arrange ground transport for the approximately one-hour drive to reach the highlands. The site is best visited during warmer months when roads are clear and outdoor conditions are comfortable for walking.
The plateau features three separate sunflower fields planted at different times to ensure continuous blooming throughout the summer season. This staggered planting allows visitors to observe flowers in different stages of their bloom cycle during a single visit.
