雪割橋, Road bridge in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan
Yukiwaribashi (雪割橋) is a road bridge in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, built with steel and concrete to span a local river. It carries two vehicle lanes and has pedestrian walkways on both sides of the roadway.
The bridge replaced an earlier crossing that had long connected communities on opposite banks of the river along old local routes. Once the new structure was completed, it made travel easier for people living in settlements that had previously been cut off during heavy snowfall.
The name Yukiwaribashi means "snow-splitting bridge" in Japanese, which reflects the heavy snowfall this part of Fukushima Prefecture receives each winter. Visitors crossing it in the colder months can see the river below partly frozen, framed by snow-covered banks.
The bridge can be reached by local bus, with stops at both ends, and nearby parking is available for those arriving by car. A winter visit requires care, as roads in this part of Fukushima can become slippery with snow and ice.
Although the bridge is primarily a working road crossing, the view from its walkways over the river and surrounding hills is especially colorful in autumn, when the foliage turns red and yellow. This contrast between ordinary infrastructure and the landscape around it tends to catch first-time visitors off guard.
