Sesshō-seki, Volcanic rock in Nasu, Japan.

Sessho-seki emits toxic volcanic gases from Mount Nasu, making the surrounding area devoid of plant and animal life due to sulfur dioxide emissions.

The stone gained attention during the Heian period when it became associated with the tale of a nine-tailed fox spirit that transformed after battling imperial forces.

Japanese folklore incorporates this stone into traditional performances, particularly in Noh theater productions that narrate the story of Tamamo-no-Mae.

Visitors access the stone through Nasu-yumoto Hot Springs area in Tochigi Prefecture, where signs indicate safety distances due to toxic volcanic fumes.

In March 2022, the stone split into two parts through natural weathering, leading local priests to perform ceremonies to maintain spiritual balance.
