Nasu Animal Kingdom, Animal theme park and zoo in Nasu, Japan.
Nasu Animal Kingdom is an animal park and leisure facility in Nasu, Japan, divided into areas such as Kingdom Town where tigers and wolves live in enclosures and Kingdom Farm featuring alpacas and reindeer. The grounds combine animal presentations with thermal bath facilities, restaurants and souvenir outlets.
The park first opened in April 1998 as a combined zoo and public bath facility in the Nasu region. Over the years the site expanded to include multiple themed sections and additional animal species, among them owls and birds of prey native to Japan.
This park combines the Japanese appreciation for wildlife with the tradition of natural hot spring bathing. After walking among birds of prey and farmyard animals, many visitors head to the public bath areas fed by local thermal water.
Feeding sessions and presentations take place at several points across the park, so early arrival allows time for a full circuit. Paths between sections are mostly level, though some areas involve hilly ground and require moderate walking ability.
The park is home to the Blakiston's fish owl, Japan's largest owl species, which is endangered in the wild. These birds with a wingspan reaching up to 180 cm (71 inches) are native to northern Japan and are kept here in a breeding program.
