Sukagawa Peony Garden, Botanical garden and Place of Scenic Beauty in Sukagawa, Japan
Sukagawa Peony Garden is a botanical garden with more than 7,000 peony flowers spanning 290 different varieties across 10 hectares. The collection displays the full range of these blooms, from early-flowering to late-flowering types.
The garden was founded in 1766 by an herbalist who originally cultivated plants for traditional Chinese medicine purposes. Over time, it grew into a place where people come to see blooms rather than harvest roots.
The garden holds designation as a National Place of Scenic Beauty and represents a long tradition of peony cultivation in Japan. Visitors today can see how peonies remain central to how locals understand their landscape and heritage.
You can reach the garden by taxi from JR Sukagawa Station or by car, with both options taking about 15 minutes. The visit works best during the blooming season when the widest range of varieties is visible at once.
Some of the peonies here are over 200 years old and grow in their original soil, making them living witnesses to the garden's past. The local Showa-no-yume variety grows only in this location and nowhere else in Japan.
