Sukagawa

Sukagawa is a city in Fukushima Prefecture that spreads across hilly terrain in the heart of the region. The urban area mixes older residential neighborhoods with modern commercial streets and sits in landscape surrounded by forests and farmland.

The area was originally part of ancient Mutsu Province and later developed into a castle town under the Nikaido clan during the Kamakura period. This early structure shaped the city's layout, which remains visible in how the place is organized today.

The Taimatsu Akashi Festival takes place here each year when residents carry large burning torches through the streets in a tradition that remains central to local identity. The festival reflects how deeply rooted customs continue to shape daily celebrations and community bonds.

The city connects well to the JR Tohoku Main Line, making it easy to reach other parts of the prefecture. Exploring the area works best with local buses or a rental car to move between neighborhoods and see the surrounding landscape.

Since 1983, the city has maintained a sister city relationship with Luoyang, China, leading to regular cultural exchange programs. This international connection allows visitors and residents to engage with a very different culture on a personal level.
