Sumpu Castle Park

Sumpu Castle Park sits on expansive grounds featuring original stone walls, reconstructed gates, and traditional gardens around the remains of the fortress. Sections of the moat still hold water, and restored watchtowers stand at key points, helping visitors understand the castle's former layout.

The site began as a fortress in the 1500s and became the residence of a powerful military leader in the 1600s. When the castle fell into disuse, the grounds were transformed into a public park while preserving the original stone structures and water features.

The grounds feature distinct strolling gardens that reflect traditional Japanese landscaping styles visitors can explore at their own pace. The carefully arranged plants and water features show how people have long valued the harmony between built and natural spaces here.

The park is within walking distance from the main train station and offers free access to most areas, with some sections requiring a small entry fee. Well-marked paths make it easy to navigate, and the flat terrain works well for most visitors exploring at a leisurely pace.

A citrus tree planted centuries ago still grows within the grounds and serves as a living link to the fortress's past. This tree remains one of the oldest planted objects on the site, connecting visitors directly to the people who inhabited it long ago.
