Kashiya Cave Tombs

Kashiya Cave Tombs form a necropolis with over a hundred burial chambers carved into a steep hillside across multiple levels. The rectangular entrances open to vaulted burial rooms designed to hold the deceased.

These tombs originated between the 6th and 8th centuries during a shift in Japanese burial practices. The period marks a transition from earth burial to cremation as the dominant method of handling the deceased.

The tombs reflect ancient Japanese burial customs through pottery, jewelry, and ritual objects discovered during excavations. These findings offer insight into how people viewed death and prepared their deceased during this era.

The protected area allows visitors to view the burial chambers from designated walkways and viewing points. Wear sturdy shoes and take your time on the steep paths, as the terrain is uneven and requires careful footing.

Locals call this site Kashiya Hyakuan, a reference to its original extent with hundreds of tombs. Much of the necropolis has vanished or deteriorated over the centuries, leaving only the protected core visible today.
