Kashiya Cave Tombs, Cave tomb complex in Kannami, Japan

The Kashiya Cave Tombs contain a series of burial chambers carved into tuff layers across four to five levels on a steep hillside.

Dating from the 6th to 8th centuries, these tombs represent a transition period in Japanese burial practices, shifting from traditional interment to cremation methods.

Archaeological excavations uncovered Haji and Sue pottery, gold jewelry, weapons, and a tortoise shell used for divination rituals by ancient Japanese societies.

The protected area includes groups B and C, preserving 116 tombs with rectangular entrances and vaulted chambers measuring 1.5 meters in height.

Known locally as Kashiya One Hundred Holes, this necropolis originally contained between 300 and 500 tombs spread across a 600 by 250 meter area.
