Palasinaz Lakes, Alpine lakes in Brusson, Italy
Palasinaz is a group of six alpine lakes situated between 2,487 and 2,632 meters in elevation, nestled among mountain ridges and grassy slopes. The waters are cold and clear, and the surrounding landscape shifts in color throughout the seasons.
Roman coins found near the lakes suggest the area was known in ancient times, possibly serving as a burial site for people from nearby communities. This discovery reveals a long connection between the high mountains and settlements below.
The name Palasinaz comes from a local patois word meaning steep pastures, a term used throughout the Aosta Valley. These lakes sit within mountain grazing lands that have shaped how people use and see the valley.
The lakes are reached by a hiking trail starting from the Estoul parking lot, taking roughly two to three hours on foot depending on the pace. Wear sturdy shoes and bring layers, as weather can change quickly at this elevation.
Some lakes are home to underwater plants and fish, while others are bare of aquatic life, revealing differences in their chemistry. This variety means each lake offers a different experience to visitors.
