Kiyama Castle, Mountain fortress in Sakaide and Marugame, Japan
Located at Mount Shiroyama, the castle site spans over 60 hectares with two concentric bands of stone walls extending 3.5 and 4.2 kilometers respectively.
The Yamato court constructed this fortress between 668 and 670 after the Battle of Hakusukinoe, employing Baekje engineers to create coastal defense fortifications.
The castle grounds include the ancient Shiroyama Shrine, recorded in ninth-century documents, marking the location of the former Sanuki Province capital.
Visitors can reach the castle site within 15 minutes by car from Kamogawa Station on the JR Shikoku Yosan Line, accessing both ruins and hiking paths.
The castle structure incorporates earthwork fortifications with varying heights around the mountain summit, revealing limited archaeological artifacts during excavations.
