前橋厄除大師, Buddhist temple in Maebashi, Japan

The Maebashi Yakuyoke Daishi temple contains two main Buddhist statues: the Kannon Bodhisattva and the Kobo Daishi, both kept hidden from public view.

Founded in 1533 during the Tenbun period, this temple belongs to the Shingon Chizan Buddhist sect and received its Kobo Daishi statue from Kawasaki Daishi temple in 1888.

The temple performs goma fire rituals, a specialized form of esoteric Buddhist practice where prayers are offered through the burning of wooden sticks.

The temple office operates daily from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, offering various prayer services, including traffic safety blessings and memorial services for pets.

Every ten years, the temple opens its doors for a special viewing of the normally concealed Kannon Bodhisattva statue, with the next unveiling scheduled for 2033.
