Kumagaya Athletic Stadium, Athletic stadium in Kumagaya, Japan
Kumagaya Athletic Stadium is a track and field venue located inside the Kumagaya Sports and Culture Park, a large sports complex in the city of Kumagaya, Saitama Prefecture. It has a 9-lane running track, a natural grass infield, and seating for around 15,000 spectators.
The stadium was built in 1996 and opened in 2003 as part of Saitama Prefecture's effort to expand its sports infrastructure. Over the following years it grew into one of the main venues for athletics competitions in the Kanto region.
Kumagaya is known as one of the hottest cities in Japan, and athletes training here often deal with intense summer heat that is part of daily life in this part of Saitama. This reputation for heat has made the stadium a place where endurance and physical preparation are taken very seriously.
The sports park around the stadium is large, so it helps to check which entrance is closest to the main stand before you arrive. On competition days, other venues within the same park may also be in use, so the area can get busy near the gates.
Just a short walk away from the athletics track sits the Kumagaya Rugby Stadium, which hosted matches during the 2019 Rugby World Cup. The two venues are close enough that on some days visitors can attend events at both within the same visit.
