Gyōda City Museum

The Gyoda City Museum sits on the former grounds of Oshi Castle and displays artifacts that document how the region developed across different periods. The collections include exhibits about local shoe manufacturing and materials from the ancient burial sites of Sakitama Kofun Park.

The institution opened in February 1988 on the site of a fortress built in the 15th century that held strategic importance during the Muromachi period. Before becoming a museum, the grounds had served as a center of power and later as a hub for the region's growing shoe manufacturing industry.

The museum displays how traditional jika-tabi split-toe shoes were made, showing Gyoda's history as a major center for this distinctive footwear craft. Visitors can see the tools and techniques that once defined the city's working life and economy.

The museum is easy to reach by bus from Gyoda Station or on foot from Gyodashi Station, both options taking just a short time. The central location makes it simple to fit a visit into your day while exploring the city.

The museum holds collections connected to the ancient burial grounds at Sakitama Kofun Park, where tombs from the 5th to 7th century still exist. These archaeological holdings offer a window into a civilization far older than the castle site itself.
