View-O, Observation deck and flood gate in Numazu, Japan
The View-O facility integrates a 48.8-meter-high observation deck with a massive flood gate system, providing 360-degree views of Suruga Bay and Mount Fuji.
Constructed over eight years and inaugurated on September 26, 2004, this engineering structure stands as one of Japan's three largest flood gates for tsunami protection.
The name 'View-O' combines the English word 'view' with the Japanese word 'uo' meaning fish, reflecting the facility's connection to Numazu's maritime heritage.
The observation deck remains open daily from 10:00 to 20:00, with reduced hours until 14:00 on Thursdays, offering entry for 100 yen for adults.
The 406-ton gate, measuring 40 meters wide and 9.3 meters high, automatically closes upon detection of specific seismic activities to protect the harbor.
