Ōtone Bridge, Road bridge between Abiko and Toride, Japan
Ōtone Bridge is a road bridge over the Tone River, linking Abiko in Chiba Prefecture to Toride in Ibaraki Prefecture. The crossing stretches over about 1,200 meters (3,900 feet) across one of the wider stretches of the river in the Kanto Plain.
The bridge was built to establish a fixed road link across the Tone River at a point where crossings had previously depended on ferries or long detours. Its construction made it possible to drive directly between the two prefectures without following older, slower routes.
The bridge carries National Route 6 and Route 294, two of the main roads linking the Tokyo area to the northeast of Japan. Crossing it on a weekday gives a clear sense of how much daily movement flows between Chiba and Ibaraki prefectures.
The bridge is built for road traffic and is not set up for pedestrians or cyclists looking to cross the river on foot or by bike. Those wanting to see the Tone River up close are better off heading to the riverbanks near either end of the bridge.
Just downstream stands the Shin-Ōtone Bridge, while the Tonegawa Railway Bridge sits upstream, making this one of the most crossed sections of the Tone River. Three entirely different types of crossing converge within a short distance of each other along the same stretch of water.
