Matsuyama Castle, Hilltop feudal castle in Matsuyama, Japan
Matsuyama Castle is a fortress complex on Mount Katsuyama that includes multiple buildings arranged on different levels, connected by narrow passages and defensive gates. The hilltop location offers expansive views of the city and countryside below.
Construction began around 1602 under the direction of Kato Yoshiaki and continued over several decades as the fortress was expanded in stages. A lightning strike destroyed the original structure in 1820, after which it was substantially rebuilt.
This castle served as the region's administrative center, and its layout reflects the needs of samurai rule over the surrounding lands. The arrangement of buildings and fortifications shows how authority was exercised from this hilltop position.
You can reach the fortress by walking up stairs or taking a funicular railway, each route offering rest spots and different views along the way. Wear sturdy shoes as the paths are steep and can become slippery in wet weather.
The grounds are surrounded by around two hundred cherry trees that create a brief moment of intense bloom each spring. This is one of the rare places where you can see an original feudal castle still standing in its landscape setting.
