Hiyoriyama Park, Hilltop park in Sakata, Japan.
Hiyoriyama Park sits on an artificial hill overlooking the port of Sakata, providing views across the Japan Sea and surrounding cityscape.
The park's soil was transported to create an elevated position where shipping agents monitored merchant vessels entering the port during Japan's trading era.
The park contains Japan's oldest stone compass and wooden lighthouse, representing the maritime traditions of the Yamagata Prefecture region.
Visitors can access the replica of a kitamae cargo ship by crossing a connecting bridge from the main park area to explore maritime history.
From the observation point, guests observe sunsets over the Japan Sea while standing next to historical maritime navigation instruments.
