Murayama Bridge

Murayama Bridge carries both railway and road traffic across the Chikuma River, linking two cities with integrated infrastructure. The structure includes separate pedestrian pathways and accommodates trains and vehicles passing through at the same time.

Built in 1926, this bridge replaced an older pontoon structure at the same crossing point. Upon completion, it ranked among the longest bridge structures in Japan.

The bridge serves as a central transportation link for the Nagano Electric Railway, integrating rail and road infrastructure in a distinctive engineering configuration.

Pedestrians can use dedicated pathways that are separated from rail and road traffic. The best time to visit is during daylight hours when views of the river and surrounding landscape are clearest.

What makes this bridge special is that trains and cars travel on it at the same time, a rare engineering solution in Japan. Its ability to combine both types of traffic without conflicts represents an interesting technical achievement of its era.
