Yokotsu-dake, Mountain summit in Nanae, Japan.
Yokotsu-dake is a mountain summit in Nanae, on the island of Hokkaido, Japan, rising to about 3,800 feet (1,167 meters). It sits within a forested range and can be reached by marked hiking trails.
The first recorded ascent of the mountain took place in 1975, marking the start of documented mountaineering in the area. From that point on, it gradually became a known destination for hikers across Hokkaido.
The mountain is well-known among climbers in Hokkaido and draws regular visitors from nearby communities. Its name reflects the local geography and remains part of the region's climbing tradition.
The mountain is best approached in the warmer months, when the trails are free of snow and easier to follow. Sturdy footwear and rain protection are a good idea, as weather on Hokkaido peaks can change quickly.
On a clear day, both Yotei-zan and Iwaki-yama are visible from the top, two of the most recognized peaks on the island. This makes the summit a good vantage point for reading the layout of Hokkaido's mountain ranges at a glance.
