Isola delle Correnti Lighthouse, Maritime lighthouse in Portopalo di Capo Passero, Italy
The Isola delle Correnti Lighthouse is a white fiberglass tower standing on a small islet off Sicily's southeastern coast, reachable by a rocky path from the mainland. The structure sits in front of an older stone building and serves as a navigation aid for ships passing through busy waters.
The original structure was built in 1865 as an octagonal stone tower with a viewing balcony and lantern, standing beside a keeper's residence. A modern fiberglass replacement was constructed in front of the historic building in the early 2000s.
The lighthouse marks the exact point where the Ionian Sea meets the Mediterranean Sea, guiding vessels through these intersecting waters.
Access to the islet requires walking across a rocky coastal path that can become treacherous in high tides or rough seas. Wear sturdy shoes and check conditions before crossing, as the route is exposed to strong winds.
The beacon operates entirely on solar power and flashes a white light every four seconds visible for up to 11 nautical miles across the sea. This automated system allows the remote lighthouse to function without any resident keeper.
