Grotta Calafarina

Grotta Calafarina is a natural cave with a depth of about 20 meters and a length of over 100 meters, featuring limestone walls. The interior is divided into multiple chambers with varied stone formations.

The cave was investigated in the early 1900s by archaeologist Paolo Orsi, who uncovered remains from various periods. Particularly important were the finds from the Early Bronze Age, known as the Castelluccian phase.

The cave displays traces of different ancient peoples who lived in this region over many centuries. You can still see remains of tools and everyday objects left behind by various Mediterranean civilizations.

The site is located between Marzamemi and Portopalo di Capo Passero on the southern coast of Sicily. Access and visiting conditions are managed by the Syracuse Superintendency, which handles inquiries about opening times and entry.

In 2022, the fashion house Dolce & Gabbana chose the nearby town of Marzamemi for a fashion show inspired by the beauty of this coastal landscape. The event brought international attention to this lesser-known part of Sicily.
