Hohllay

Hohllay is a sandstone cave in Berdorf featuring massive natural pillars that support a vaulted ceiling. The walls display clear tool marks from centuries of stone extraction work.

The cave has been used as a stone quarry since Roman times, with workers extracting millstones from the sandstone until the 19th century. This long period of extraction fundamentally shaped the cave's structure and appearance.

The interior walls display shell-shaped patterns left by generations of stone workers who created traditional quarries here. These marks tell the story of those who shaped the sandstone with basic tools over centuries.

Three hiking trails lead to the cave with varying difficulty levels, with the easiest suitable for most fitness levels and more challenging routes passing through scenic gorges. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and allow plenty of time, especially for longer walks.

The cave's natural pillars create an underground chamber resembling a cathedral, which can be used for musical performances in suitable weather. This unusual acoustic quality makes it a distinctive venue for experimental concerts and cultural gatherings.
