Suginami Historical Museum

Suginami Historical Museum is a local history museum in Wadabori Park that displays regional artifacts and documents across multiple structures. The facility comprises a main building and traditional Japanese annexes set within landscaped grounds.

Established in 1989, the museum displays archaeological finds from prehistoric times and stone markers documenting early settlement in the region. Its collections trace the development of Suginami ward from its earliest inhabitants onward.

The museum grounds preserve an authentic Nagayamon gate from the Edo period and a traditional Japanese dwelling with tatami mats, sliding screens, and a sunken hearth. These historic structures offer visitors a direct sense of how residents lived in this area centuries ago.

Access is on foot through the Wadabori Park grounds, and exploring the various buildings typically takes about one to two hours. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes since you will walk between structures on pathways and must remove your footwear when entering certain buildings.

Museum staff light the traditional irori firepit on weekends and holidays and serve visitors warm tea. This hands-on demonstration reveals how people once heated their homes and prepared meals in the hearth.
