Huis te Riviere, Medieval château ruins in Schiedam, Netherlands
The site contains remnants of a heavy brick tower and fortified walls near the current town hall of Schiedam at Huis te Riviere street.
Countess Aleid van Holland constructed this rectangular castle in 1262 as a toll station for vessels traveling on the Maas river.
The ruins represent the evolution of Dutch defensive architecture, featuring the oldest known rectangular castle design in the county of Holland.
The remains of this medieval structure are visible from the street, with a commemorative artwork of Countess Aleid placed beside them in 1997.
The original foundation of the castle required partial reconstruction due to settling issues caused by an underground creek and marshy peat soil.
