Proveniershuis, Schiedam, Gate building and hofje in Schiedam, Netherlands
Proveniershuis is a residential complex and heritage building in Schiedam with ornate brick architecture and a decorated facade. The layout features multiple dwelling units that were historically built to house older residents who lived there permanently.
The building was designed between 1756 and 1761 by sculptor Joseph Bollina and replaced an earlier leper house at the location. It later served as a poorhouse before transitioning to modern use.
The building shows how wealthier older people in the 18th century paid for housing and care instead of relying on family support. This path of private retirement was common among more affluent citizens and reflects the social structures of that era.
The building is located along the Schiedamse Schie canal on Overschiesestraat street and is now private housing. The location is easy to reach on foot and offers a good view of its outer structure from the street.
The name Proveniershuis comes from the proveniers, the residents who passed down their places like an inheritance. This practice of hereditary housing was unusual in Schiedam and made the building socially distinctive.
