IJsseltoren, Office tower in Voorsterpoort district, Zwolle, Netherlands
The IJsseltoren is an office tower in Zwolle, standing 23 floors tall near the A28 highway on the edge of the city center. The building houses several companies and includes shared facilities such as security services and a canteen for tenants.
Construction of the tower began in 2004, after a legal dispute over the protection of Zwolle's city views was settled in court. Its completion marked a clear shift in the style of office buildings in the region.
The tower stands out clearly when approaching Zwolle from the east, rising well above the surrounding rooftops. Its slim glass and steel profile contrasts with the older city skyline and shows how the business district has shifted in recent decades.
The building is mainly accessible during weekday business hours, as it is an active office tower. Visitors without an appointment are generally limited to the ground floor area.
The IJsseltoren is considered one of the three tallest buildings in the northern and eastern Netherlands, a region not generally known for tall towers. The architect René Steevensz of PPKS Architects gave the building a glass facade that changes in appearance depending on the light and weather.
