Sint-Gummaruskerk, Catholic church in Steenbergen, Netherlands
Sint-Gummaruskerk is a church in Steenbergen with a three-aisled basilica layout featuring yellow brick walls and three towers. The central round tower rises at the crossing, while two square towers anchor the corners of the structure.
The church was built in 1901 on a site with earlier structures dating back to the 13th century. It was seriously damaged during World War II and later underwent substantial restoration work.
The church stands as a visual landmark in Steenbergen's townscape and serves as a gathering place that reflects the community's identity. Its distinctive yellow brick exterior has become a recognizable feature that residents use to orient themselves in the city.
Visitors can arrange appointments to climb the 83-meter main tower, which offers views reaching the Antwerp cathedral on clear days. It is advisable to book access in advance since the tower is not always open to the public.
The structure rests on about 1100 wooden piles driven into the soft ground below. Additional chapels were added in 1928 to better distribute the building's weight and prevent further settling.
