Holtum Castle, castle in Holtum, Netherlands
Holtum Castle, also known as Huize Holtum, is a stone-built residential castle in the village of Holtum near Sittard in the province of Limburg. The building displays fortress-like features with solid walls and preserves architectural details from different construction periods.
The castle was first documented in 1354 and was likely built by Johannes Voss. In the 17th century, it underwent major reconstruction, with some stones reused from an older 14th-century structure.
The castle is known as Huize Holtum and has been home to the Keulen-Gerads family since 1986. An artist named Marie-José Gerads uses part of the house as a studio to create abstract paintings displayed in the outbuildings.
The castle is a private residence and not open to the public, but you can view its stone structure and solid construction from the outside. Staying at a bed and breakfast in the former coach house, Chateau Holtum, offers a closer experience with this historic property.
A fireplace from the 17th century remains visible inside the castle, showing the craftsmanship of that era. The front of the building features a decorative fronton added in the early 1800s.
