Susteren Abbey

Susteren Abbey is a former Benedictine monastery in Limburg with a church displaying Romanesque features from the medieval period. The structure shows typical architectural elements of this era, including rounded arches and thick walls that remain intact.

The abbey was founded in 701 by Pepin of Herstal and quickly became a center for missionaries spreading Christianity across Frisia and the Netherlands. Late in the 18th century, the French Revolution resulted in the monastery's closure, leaving only the church structure standing.

The basilica remains connected to Saint Amelberga, whose veneration shaped the spiritual life here for centuries. Pilgrims and visitors come to experience this link to early Christianity and witness the religious relics preserved within.
