BNZ Harbour Quays, Commercial building in Wellington, New Zealand.
BNZ Harbour Quays was a modern office building with six stories featuring separate blocks linked by internal courtyards and extensive glazing. The structure rose along Wellington's waterfront with clear sightlines to the harbor and surrounding cityscape.
The building opened in 2007 as part of the waterfront's major redevelopment effort and served as the bank's main headquarters. A significant earthquake in 2013 caused serious structural damage that made restoration unfeasible.
The structure takes its name from its location along Wellington's waterfront where shipping and commerce have long connected the city to the wider world.
The building was walkable from the city center and accessible by various local routes around the waterfront. Its position on the harbor's edge made it easily visible as part of the broader quayside development.
Rather than being demolished by explosion, the building was carefully taken apart piece by piece in 2019 so that concrete could be recycled and other materials reused. This careful approach demonstrated an alternative way to remove large modern structures while keeping waste to a minimum.
